Nikko

Ein Wort vorneweg: diesen Post wird es zweisprachig (Deutsch/Englisch) geben. Gründe werden im Text erklärt.

In der Zeit der letzten Ferienwoche, eigentlich am Tag bevor der Unterricht wieder beginnen sollte, habe ich für meine Freundin Rachele einen kleinen Botengang erledigt und eine ihrer Freundinnen, Greta, in aller Herrgottsfrühe vom Narita Flughafen abgeholt. Rachele musste an dem Tag unerwartet arbeiten und war froh, dass ich mich ohne Umschweife bereit erklärt habe einzuspringen. Das hat sich letztlich als Glücksfall erwiesen, da ich dann das Vergnügen hatte, in den nächsten Tagen ein paar Ausflüge mit den Beiden zu machen.
(During the last free days, more exactly on the last day before class would start again, I did a small deed for my friend Rachele and picked up one her friends, Greta, at Narita Airport in the early hours of the day.  Rachele had to work this day and was really glad, that I could help her out without hesitating. In the end, this was a lucky turn, since I could enjoy some trips in the following days with both of them)

Am 13.04 sind Greta und ich dann alleine nach Nikko gefahren, einen der bekannteren Orte im etwas weiteren Tokyoter Umkreis. Nikko hat inoffiziell den Namen "dreckiges Kyoto", was ich nun bestätigen kann. Das was wir vom Ort selbst gesehen haben war leider recht schäbig und wenig eindrucksvoll. Zum Glück wollten wir uns im Ort auch nicht weiter aufhalten sondern den Nahgelegenen Nationalpark aufsuchen, in dem sich wiedermal Schreine, Tempel und Museen tummeln sollten.
(At the 13th of April, Greta and me went of on our own to Nikko, one of the more famous Places around Tokyo. Nikko bears unofficially the Nickname of "Dirty Kyoto" which I can approve now.  What we saw of the town itself was a bit shabby and didn't impress us much. Luckily, we weren't supposed to stay there but went of to the national park area with the temples, shrines and museums instead.)

Wir haben eine Art Kombiticket geholt, welches uns ein wenig Geld gespart hat da wir am Ende alle Orte von Interesse besucht haben und so nicht andauernd einzeln zu Kasse gebeten wurden.
Im Park haben wir den restlichen Vormittag und den frühen Nachmittag verbracht, und da meine Camera an dem Tag gestreikt hat, musste ich Gretas benutzen (da sie nicht gerne Fotos macht, hab ich das meistens übernommen).
(We bought a combi-ticket, which safed us some money because we visited all the interesting places and didn't have to pay those one by one. We spent the rest of the morning and the early hours of the afternoon inside the park area and , since my camera was not working properly, I had to rely in Gretas and since she doesn't like to take photos that much, I did that most of the time.)

Nachdem wir unsere Runde durch die Tempel/Schrein Anlage beendet hattet, eine komplett deutschsprachige Reisegruppe gefunden sowie nebenbei noch bei einer total unmotivierten Verkäuferin Briefmarken erworben hatten, haben wir uns dann auf den Weg zurück zur Busstation gemacht, um den anderen interessanten Teil von Nikko zu besuchen: Die Wasserfälle und die Gegend um den Großen Bergsee. Die Busfahrt dauerte rund 45 minuten und leider fuhr der letzte Bus auch recht bald wieder zurück, sodass wir unsere Pläne etwas eingrenzen mussten. Wir haben uns dann zuerst einen der Wasserfälle angeschaut und anschließend einen kleinen Spaziergang um den See gemacht.
(After we finished visiting the temples and shrines, encountered a large group of german speakers and bought stamps for Greta from a very unmotivated seller, we went back to the bus station to get to the other interesting part if Nikko: the waterfalls and area around the mountain lake. The ride took us around 45 minutes und sadly, the last bus back was departing soon so that we had to tighten our plans a little bit. We saw one of the Waterfalls and walked along the lake for some time.)

Der Frühling hatte in der Bergregion noch nicht wirklich Einzug gehalten, daher sah es leider etwas karg und winterlich aus, auch wenn es nicht allzu kalt war. Die Gegend ist (mal wieder) im Herbst vermutlich eher einen Besuch wert. War aber dennoch ganz nett insgesamt. Hätten wir noch mehr Zeit gehabt, wären wir noch bis zur Onsen-Gegend weitergefahren, aber das wären noch einmal 30 min mehr Busfahrt in die falsche Richtung gewesen. Daher mein Tipp: für Nikko 2 Tage einplanen, damit man die Berggegend in Ruhe angehen kann. Mehr muss aber auch nicht, dann lieber nach Kamakura oder so ;)
(Spring had not yet come to this area so that it still looked a bit sparse and like in winter, even if it wasn't really cold. I think (again) this area is better visited in autum. But still, it was a nice trip. If we would have had more time, we could have gone to the onsen area, but that would mean another 30 min trip by bus into the wrong direction. My advice is to go to Nikko for two days so that one can visit the whole mountain area without stress. But more than 2 days is a waste, since Kamakura is more worth a visit)

Gegen 18 Uhr fuhr unser letzter Zug zurück in Richtung Tokyo. Bei diesem handelte es sich leider um einen Local, keinen Express, daher brauchten wir rund drei Stunden für den Heimweg.
(Around 6 pm our last train back to Tokyo departed. This one was a local one, not an express, so that our way home took us more or less 3 hours.)

Fazit: Wenn man Zeit hat und zur richtigen Jahreszeit fährt ist Nikko einen Besuch wert, aber wenn man kaum Zeit hat würde ich eher Hakone, Kamakura oder sonst irgendwas mit schöner Landschaft empfehlen.
(Conclusion: You have to go to Nikko during the right season and only if you can spare 2 days for it, but if you are short on time then rather go to Hakone, Kamakura or someplace else with more beautifull landscape.)
